Anastasia part II

One Step at a Time….

After four years of developmental readings and workshops, and after finishing our Hartford run almost eight months ago, Anastasia has finally begun its last steps to the Broadway stage. In recent months, the Authors have been working on rewrites, the scenic and costume designers have been drafting and building the show, and the marketing teams have been hard at work establishing Anastasia as the must-see show of the 2017 Spring season. At the beginning of February, the Broadway production entered into the next stage of preparation. Crews began loading in the lights and rigging equipment, the Front of House artwork was installed, and rehearsals began with the full cast.

While crews are busy loading equipment into the theatre, Anastasia rehearses at a facility off site, a location where multiple shows are rehearsing for their own Spring Broadway opening. Our production shares the hallways with teams from Miss Saigon, Hamilton, and other shows. To help the actors practice spacing, a mockup of the set was created for the team to work on while rehearsing in the studio. The props used in the show are also available to the actors, as are rehearsal clothes that replicate the shape and feel of their stage worn costumes.

The first day of rehearsal, there was a blizzard and much of New York City shut down. We had to reschedule a few agenda items for the day, but as the saying goes, ‘the show must go on!’ we went on to have a productive and safe first day.

The Front Page, another Broadway play, was playing at the Broadhurst Theatre until January 25. Anastasia had to wait for their production to load out of the theatre before we could begin loading in ours. In the meantime, we were able to put up the first part of our Front of House and Marquee. It looks great!

In early March, all departments will converge at the Broadhurst to have the first day on stage with the cast, in costume, and begin to integrate all the technical elements of the show from the beginning. We’ll begin to collate all the departments over a few weeks and make changes until previews begin 23 March, when we open the doors to the public allowing the first audience to see the world of Anastasia.
